"Tetsu, how many do we have?" Daiki asks, lifting his eyes to look at his friend. He sounds serious, almost as serious as he looked while facing Kagami last winter, but Tetsuya can see traces of the smile that had been showing on his face a minute ago as he held a cicada in his hand.
"I still do not understand why we're doing this," he replies, while taking out the glass jar they are shoving the insects in. They scamper and crawl around, looking for a way to escape by climbing on the wooden twigs inside their glass prison, and Tetsuya calmly counts them. "Ten. Please let's go home now, I need to go sleep and so should you," he adds, and then he turns his head to look up at the moon. It's slightly faded from being on its waning gibbous phase, but it still seems like he can make it home and take a shower, then go to bed at a decent time.
They spent a few hours here, during the time when the grass grows and flowers bloom, and sometimes cherry petals dance with the wind showering the green gardens. Everything is green, and the air smells like grass, the breeze brushes on their skin quietly with the kind of calm they can only allow themselves to be in only in between tournaments. As Riko said, it's not like Seirin's victory at the Winter Cup means they can slack off: it's like their training reset and they have to climb back to the top all over again. Which is why Tetsuya sounds surprised that Daiki decided to do this instead of practicing, especially since he stopped skipping practice for the club, and Momoi stopped worrying about him.
"I told you, it's a secret!" Daiki replies, with a smirk. "Besides, I just missed doing this."
"Please do not play any pranks on Momoi-san," Tetsuya replies as if he saw right into Daiki's mind. "You already traumatized her with frogs. And if you do then don't be surprised that no girl will date you."
It's not like Aomine actually means to throw bugs on Satsuki's hair. He just wants to shake the jar in front of her to play a little prank, mostly because he did not get to have much fun with her the way they used to. Starting with some disgusting insects shoved under her nose sounds about right.
"Oi! I get lots of dates!" Daiki barks, offended, and looks back around with a pout, trying to hear more cicadas singing. "Geez..."
Tetsuya observes him, the way his expression speaks for itself, and his lips curve in a little knowing smile.
"Aomine-kun," he calls, and Daiki glances back at him before Tetsuya walks closer to him, lifting on his toes to give Daiki a light slap on the cheek. "Let's go home. Momoi-san will hit you if you go through with this."
"Why are you worrying about me? I'm just looking to have some fun! Honestly, I'm not a child," Daiki mutters irritated by the slap, looking down at the jar Tetsuya is holding in his hand. "Well, then go home, I don't need you anyway," he adds with some piercing disappointment, and Tetsuya sighs.
"Just two more," he establishes, looking up at the other boy. "And then we're going home."
Daiki purses his lips as if he'd eaten an entire lemon, but then he rolls his eyes sighing.
"Stop treating me like a child."
"But you are acting like one."
"That's harsh!" Daiki protests, but then some cicada's singing interrupts them, and Daiki's eyes flash towards it before he jumps into a squat, observing the area around them with so much focus it would seem that he's on the court, watching an opponent as they try to dribble past him.
Tetsuya looks over him, a bit embarrassed, but definitely happy that his friend stopped shutting himself in, and that lately he's been smiling a lot more.
"A o m i n e - k u n," Momoi hisses slowly the next day, absolutely beyond herself with fury, after marching into classroom during the lunch break to stop right before him and stare straight into Daiki's eyes with the scariest expression he's ever seen since he's been knowing her. Her hand is firm, she holds a still squirming cicada between two of her fingers, and her face is flushed with anger. Daiki's eyes go wide, as he did not expect her to realize that soon that he was the one to place a bug on her head, since he made sure to stalk across school as stealthily as he could while she was distracted and then rush away immediately, confident that he had not been seen, then plopped down on his chair and began stealing from Sakurai's bento box as per usual as an alibi.
The latter, at that display of barely contained rage, quietly retreats - chair and bento - away from Daiki, tempted to apologize for not stopping him when he pulled out the cicada jar with a grin right as the break's bell rang. But it's probably better for him if he just does not get mixed into Aomine-san's business right now.
"A-ah, hey, Satsuki, what's up?" Daiki stammers, looking straight at her and attempting to look innocent, even though of course it is way, way too late.
A minute later, Momoi marches out, still completely red in the face, mumbling: "I hope it was worth it." Ryou looks at Daiki with a horrified, helpless expression while the other's head dangles back in shock from the back of his chair, with the butt of the cicada hanging from his mouth and a bruise reddening on his forehead.
"A-are you alright, Aomine-san? I should've stopped you! I'm sorry!" Ryou screeches, not daring to come any close to where the cicada is.
Daiki does not respond.
"A-Aomine-san...?" Ryou tries again, moving closer. "Please... please don't be dead! I'm sorry!"
Daiki spits the cicada out, and then looks at Ryou with a confused gaze.
"She... she pulled an Ignite Pass Kai on my face..." he mumbles, holding his head still from spinning. "That was awesome."
Ryou stares at him with worry written all over his face, and then looks at the cicada escape to freedom from the classroom's open window.
