He knows that it does not make sense. He knows Nagisa cannot possibly be in Massachusetts right now, at the Institute of Technology, reading through a physics book while outside wind and snow slash furiously against the trees that shake under a very pale, cold sunlight. Nagisa could never be there, not with that weather, and not that far away from home, not when he is at the other end of the world.
He is back in Tottori, studying archaeology, so there is no reason why Rei's heart should skip a beat every time he sees a blond messy mop of blond hair among the heads of students looking intently at their teacher in a classroom, or moving in the sea of heads in the halls in the morning; when he spots someone with a similar build to his Nagisa's eating voraciously in the lunch room. It would not make sense for his homesick mind to go there every time something reminds him of Iwatobi, of Nagisa and Makoto-senpai and Haruka-senpai and his kouhai from his third year in high school.
But there he is, holding his breath with surprise at a voice talking, a voice that sounds somewhat similar to Nagisa's... but of course, the English should have clued him in before his brain reminding him that Nagisa is not there.
He knows it's crazy and illogical, to feel something squeeze at his guts when he sees something strawberry-shaped, when he sees penguins anywhere, when he thinks 'Nagisa would like this'.
But still.
It does not even happen that often, actually, but when it does it's a kind of thought and feeling that plants itself in his brain, he ends up on very dangerous trails of thoughts. How is he? Is he doing well in school? At home? Is he eating properly?
How will he welcome me, when I get back home?

They fought for weeks before Rei left. Skype calls and messages could never replace the feeling of hugging his Rei-chan, could never replace hearing his voice next to his ears. Technology could never be good enough to make him stop missing Rei's nerdy laughter, or it isn't yet. Nagisa spent so many nights scrolling through their messages that got older and older day after day, but could also sense the distance stretching their elastic bond, stretching it too far. It was on the point of snapping so many times, during so many sad nights.
"I can't be with you and not touch you, I can't do it, it's too painful," he kept saying.
"Rei-chan!" His voice sounds a little different from the bubbly chirps Rei left behind. Of course, during their third year in school Nagisa's voice had already changed from the one he had just a year before, but... Rei's eyes still go a bit wider at all the changes he didn't witness. Nagisa cut his hair, but that must have been a recent change - not one week passed without Nagisa sending Rei pictures of himself, messages, electronic postcards... anything that could be sent, Nagisa did.
Rei had a long time, months even, to prepare something to say, ideas for ways to catch up time as soon as they'd reunite, but now his brain froze; it's as if all its efforts are focused on just looking and taking in, like his eyes suddenly became barely able to take in the sunlight trapped within his boyfriend smiling at him before the impact happens. But when it does, Rei's body finally moves. His arms are like pulled by an invisible string, when they wrap around Nagisa's firm back, but the next problem arises when he becomes unable to let go. When Rei's body presses firmly against him, Nagisa's smile stretches to the inifnite.
And then he giggles. He sounds happy, just as happy as it feels.
"Hi, Nagisa," Rei says with his voice crackling. Nagisa told him it would be impossible for him to be together while being so far away from each other, but maybe the same went for Rei, himself, even though he retorted that they would be able to pull it off, to stay together while being apart. They did manage, but he never imagined that it would be so tricky, so harsh on his mind. That he would risk failing exams because he missed this land, this sea, this sky, this summer sun shining through the airport's windows, these buildings, these eyes so much.
"I missed you," Nagisa says. That's an understatement if he ever made one.
For Rei, the flight was nothing less than torture, as he spent all of it awake, extremely impatient as he looked and looked and tried to sense whether they were going to finally fly lower, and the wait seemed infinitely longer, even though with every second it only got shorter.
But he's here now. As he clings onto Nagisa as hard as physically possible and as he calls the other's name over and over again as if he'd almost died, he slowly smiles, knowing he's finally home.
But when summer finally comes, Nagisa sits in a waiting hall, jumping at every announcement, even though it's always too soon. He cannot even fill the wait with videogames - what if it would make him miss the right call?
But finally he does hear it. The plane is coming, Rei-chan is here.
He runs to the gate and pushes through to see him come
