"It's useless, Nagisa!" Rei snaps, at his boyfriend's latest encouragement to dive in and swim in a straight trail. He knows it's possible, but for some reason he seems to be unable to orient himself to not crash against the separation lines in lanes. He takes off the goggles - why is he even wearing them anyway? - and throws them on the water, frustrated. He hates suddenly being unable to do something he had worked so hard to achieve. "Shit, I can't do this anymore." He hisses, gritting his teeth. He has lost the habit of fixing his glasses since he went blind. But he covers his face, more with anger and sadness than anything.
He hears an air movement near him, and then a splash right after, as Nagisa has clearly dived in. They're alone in the pool, since the blond has asked Makoto and Haruka to be, since it would probably be easier for him to be with Rei and to train together without anyone else being there. Rei has grown incredibly self-conscious about his blindness, like it's his fault, like something about him changed him forever, inherently. For Nagisa, he's still the same Rei-chan. Even when he could see, so many things escaped his attention. Even when he thought he saw everything, he still could not really notice so many things, to which he has opened up to now.
He reaches him, grabs his wrists and kisses his cheek. "Did you give up when you wanted to learn all the other strokes?" He asks calmly, with his fingers running up the other's arms.
"It's not the same thing," Rei mutters, conscious of how he must look from the outside. A blind boy who is probably looking really creepy. That's not what Nagisa sees: all he sees is the same boy who joined the swim club without being able to swim.
"It is the same thing. And I'm here to help you!" He replies, tying his arms around the taller boy's neck. They exchange a soft kiss, which Rei perceives as the entirety of his universe in that moment, with Nagisa being the brightest star that he cannot see, but can feel the warmth of. He touches the smaller's face, like to remind himself of what he looks like even though the image is impressed on his eyelids, unforgettable. Nagisa smiles, and Rei can see it through his fingers, so he smiles as well, even if just a little.
"I hate doing it all over again," he mutters, and curses himself as he tries to find the goggles. Nagisa fishes them up for him, and sighs.
"Do you see me any differently, Nagisa-kun?" He suddenly asks, and the other has to decipher what that means before answering.
"Rei-chan is Rei-chan." He replies, simply. "Something like blindness cannot change that."
The blind boy nods, in silence, and sighs. "I guess. I just thought I'm a burden now," he confesses, and he's kind of glad he is blind, because he doesn't need to look away after saying that. He cannot see Nagisa's sad and hurt expression, at least.
"You're not a burden. Do you think I think that?" He asks, with his voice lowering, pained.
"N-no, I just..."
"Do you think I would be here helping you if I thought you were a burden, or not worth my time? Do you really think I'm the kind of guy who just does things out of pity?" Nagisa keeps going, clenching his fists, and raises his voice a little.
"Then why are you doing it?" Rei asks, calmly, but still something is stirring in his stomach.
"Because before being your boyfriend, I'm your best friend, and friends help each other, and I want to be with Rei-chan, and I want to spend as much time as possible with you!" Nagisa is yelling at this point, with tears forming in his eyes. "So if you think you're a burden, you're hurting me as well. I want to be here with you. I want to be here alone with you. It's just the two of us and nobody else, so nobody has to see you make mistakes."
Rei blinks, surprised, and he lowers his head, eventually nodding.
"If you want to take a break then do it, but don't give up, because if you do then I'll have to say you did change," Nagisa adds, in a lower voice, but with the disappointment only love is able to provoke. Rei feels it, Rei hears it, and he agrees. That is so not like him. That is unlike any of them.
"You're right. I could use a break, though," he replies, with a smile in his voice. Nagisa sighs relieved and nods. "Okay, let's get out, then."
"No," Rei adds, tentatively grabbing his wrist. Nagisa gives him a puzzled look as he turns around, and Rei's free hand touches his face. He closes his eyes, used to being looked at that way, his shoulders relax, and he smiles a little. He likes Rei's delicate and gentle fingers brushing softly on his face, memorizing every detail they can store. He likes that they're all alone now, in the pool which echoes with the water splashing placidly against their bodies, and reverberates their voices all around. They kiss again, Nagisa abandoning himself to Rei's touches, to his fingertips analyzing his body. It is almost erotic how his touch now is also a substitute for sight. Ironically, Nagisa cannot hide or run anymore. He is completely like an open book, and he likes being vulnerable with Rei. He is, in fact, more vulnerable than Rei himself. Being defenseless is a form of freedom for him, after all. He is safe, and so is Rei, and they will face this together, with each other's resources and strengths. They know they were born for it, after all.
